Being a Good Dog Owner

October 27, 2026

Just like children, good manners are important for our fur babies as well. Common consideration for others will help make your dog a welcome member of your family and neighborhood.

Dogs like routine and structure. If they know what you expect, it makes life easier for everyone.

Not everyone loves dogs

While you love your dog and the cute things they do, not everyone may like dogs like we do. A dog that jumps on visitors may not be a welcome habit.

Beggars

Dogs that beg for food from your guests is not the way for your dog to socialize with guests.

Barkers

Dogs that bark at the mail carrier or other visitors can be intimidating and prevent mail and packages from being delivered.

When out in shared spaces, it is important to keep your dog on a leash when required. Always carry poop bags and pick up after your dog. No one (including me) enjoys seeing dog droppings left in your yard by someone else’s dog.

Always…

Ask permission before letting your dog greet people and other dogs. Just the same as people should ask permission to pet your dog.

Being a good dog owner..

Includes providing lifelong care, a balanced diet, regular vet care and daily exercise.

According to research, dog owners generally score higher in having a friendly, pleasant character, warmth, understanding of others and responsibility. It also may explain why we tend to get very emotional when we see or hear of animal abuse.

Having a dog that is well behaved and follows commands makes for a happy and well liked member of your family!
