When Your Dog Is Lost

April 28, 2026

Realizing your dog has wondered off can cause panic. The first 48 hours are so important for finding your beloved pet.

Stay calm and being focused is the best plan. It is good to know that most dogs are recovered safely, if you act quickly and use the right tools.

Where to start

Before thinking the worst, check everywhere. Dogs are known to hide right under your nose. Make sure they didn’t accidentally get shut in a closet. Check that the gates are closed and that no one accidentally let the dog out.

Search the surrounding area on foot immediately. Most dogs don’t go too far in the first couple of hours. Check the route you walk your dog, a park or neighbors they may know.

Knowing your dog

How your dog acts will also be helpful to finding them. Are they outgoing and will approach strangers? A dog that has a shy or fearful personality may hide or not come to you.

If your dog shows signs of being frightened when you find them, resist the urge to chase them. This can push them to run farther away.

Instead:

  • Stop moving, turn sideways to make yourself look smaller and less intimidating.
  • Do not look directly at them.
  • Speak softly, get closer to the ground.
  • Take a treat, toss it near them, but don’t approach.
  • Let the dog come to you.

Enlist help

  1. Check with your neighbors to see if they have seen your dog. Have a picture to show them.
  2. Leave an item with your scent, like a t-shirt near the spot you last saw your dog.
  3. Post on Facebook, neighborhood apps and community boards as soon as possible.

Next steps

  1. Contact local shelters and animal control. There are also other websites that specialize in finding lost pets such as AKC Reunite.
  2. Posting pictures and a description is still considered one of the best ways to get the word out.
  3. If your dog is shy or fearful, be sure to add “DO NOT CHASE!” in bold letters to your flyer.

After 24 hours

Revisit places you searched right away, then increase your search area. Dogs tend to travel most at dusk and dawn.

Important factors

This is when a proper fitting dog collar with up to date ID tags is going to improve the chances of being found.

A GPS tracker on their collar can give great peace of mind and help you track your dog in real time.

Check fences and gates regularly for gaps, loose boards or holes at the fence line if your dog digs.

When you find your dog

When you find your dog, you don’t know what they have been through. Check for cuts, limping, ticks, as well as, signs of dehydration.

Watch for signs of being lethargic, whimpering or any tender spots on their body. Make a trip to the vet to be sure there are no underlying issues that you may not be able to see.

Moving forward

Once you know how your dog got lost in the first place, work quickly to find a solution to prevent this scary event from happening again.
