Here is a craft that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. From simple to the more complex, the possibilities are endless!
How to start:
First, find the rocks that you want to paint. The size and shape will depend on what you would like to create. Next, wash them to remove any dirt and debris. Give them time to dry. Then you can prime your rock with a layer of acrylic based paint. Let it dry throughly. Now you are ready to move on to the fun part!
Supplies:
- Acrylic paint
- Paint brushes in various sizes
- Outdoor sealer
- If you want to try Mandala painting, you can start with cotton swabs, the ends of paint brushes and pencil erasers to give you different size paint dots on your rock.
Mandala designs:
I have really enjoyed creating art on rocks. I first started with painting Mandala rocks.
Mandala patterns symbolize the cosmos, a circular vision of the universe. This includes the thought that life is never ending and everything is connected.
If you mess up, don’t worry! Just wash the paint off and start over. This video is a great beginner step by step instruction guide.
Additional Mandala tools:
The patterns and color combinations for your Mandalas are endless! You can also purchase dot tools for making your dots.
Using a Dremel to carve your design:
I also found I could get some great effects by using a Dremel tool and carving into the rocks.
A Dremel is a compact, high speed multi-use tool used for sanding, cutting and engraving. Using a carving/engraving bit will help you achieve this look. Always use protective eyewear and take some time to practice.
I like to draw my design on the rock when using a Dremel. I follow the Iines to etch out the rock. Once you are done, you can use a small brush to paint in the areas that you removed to make them stand out. Let your paint dry and then seal the paint with your outdoor sealer.

What else can you do with rocks?
You can paint animals! It is a matter of finding a rock that fits the shape, drawing it out, then painting it! I added stuffed animal eyes to my owl for a 3-D effect. I used E6000 glue since he sits outside during the summer. I sealed him well.
You can stencil a design on a rock like this one!
You can do fun and simple designs that kids can create!
Final words:
Any rocks I set outside I pack away before winter. I also watch the protective coat on my rocks. If the seal coat is wearing from the weather, I will add a fresh coat. The owl actually has been sanded and repainted once.
Share your painted rocks! I would love to see them!
