Painting and Decorating Seashells

Fun and interesting things to do with those “not so perfect” shells

If you go to the beach, like most of us, you end up looking down and before long, you are searching for seashells! Every time we go on vacation where there is a beach, we are sure to visit. We have found every time we go, there are shells or other treasures that are unique to that beach. Sometimes we have found starfish, sea urchins or sand dollars. Beach glass is hard to find, but every now and then, we will spot one. There are always lots of worn or “not so perfect” shells. Those finds can be turned into a work of art.

Clam style shells are probably the most seen shell you will find. They are found in all sizes. Permanent markers can make these plain Jane shells fancy.

You can use alcohol inks on the shell to create fun effects. Add jewelry embellishments by gluing them in place.

Another fun way to decorate a shell is to grow Borax crystals on it. I glued a marble in mine for an added touch.

Whether you use markers, Borax crystals or acrylic paint, always seal your project with a spray sealer.
