Exploring Watercolor Painting

January 21, 2025

I have been doing watercolor painting on and off since middle school. I find it fun and relaxing. There are several techniques you can use to get some cool effects. Using fine tip markers to accent your work can make the watercolors pop.

I like to make greeting cards, gift tags, and calendars, as well as, painting pictures. There are such cool watercolor paint sets and mediums to add to your paint to enhance your subject. Today I just want to give you a taste of using watercolor paints to dip your toes in.

Basic supplies

You will need:

  1. Paint brushes meant for watercolor.
  2. Watercolor paper
  3. Watercolors paints
  4. A container with water to rinse your brushes and mix you paint with.
  5. Paper towel to wipe your brushes and if your paint runs, to absorb the extra paint.
  6. A palette or I have used a paper plate to mix my paint.
  7. Painters tape to hold your work in place and create an outer border.

You can buy your supplies at an art store, but you can also buy them at craft stores, some discount stores and on Amazon.

There are also watercolor pencils. You color in with the pencils and then come back with a wet brush to activate the colors. I like to use them with my paints for fine details. They are fun to work with.

There are a ton of YouTube videos to watch to learn from. I really like Shayda Campbell. She has a relaxed and casual way of teaching that makes you feel less intimidated. This video is the first in a 3 part series that will give a good insight into watercolor painting.
