A Great Fall Recipe
The first time I made this was for a potluck I organized at work. After I had cleaned up at the end of the day, I grabbed my plate with the last couple bars on it. A co-worker told me to put that back on the table! “Those bars are too good to pack away!” The next time I made them was for my dad’s funeral luncheon. When a close friend’s dad passed away, I was asked to make “those bars.” A year later, I met my friend’s friend. Her first comment to me was, “Oh, you are the one who made those bars!” Today I am sharing this recipe. They are as good as I remembered!
- Prep time: 20 minutes Baking time: 1 hr 5 min. Makes: 25 bars
For the Crust:
- 2 cups flour
- 1-1/2 cups brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter (cold)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9×13 pan. Mix the flour and brown sugar together, then cut in the butter using a pastry blender, 2 knives or your hands. Press the mixture into the pan. Set aside.
Making the Topping:
- 2-1/2 cups flour
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 12 tablespoons melted butter
Mix the dry ingredients together, then mix in the melted butter. Stir well, until everything is moist, then set aside.
Next Make the Filling:
- 4 tart apples
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup sugar
Mix the dry ingredients together in a small bowl. Peel and core the apples.
You can put the apple scraps in your compost bin. Composting
Chop your apples into 1/4 to 1/2 inch pieces. Pour the sugar mixture over the apples and blend so the apples are well coated.

Putting it all Together:
Place the apples over the crust. Spread them out to form an even layer. Sprinkle the topping over the apples. Break up any clumps as you go. Cover the entire surface of the apples, then press down gently with your hands. Bake 45 minutes. Cool completely before cutting. I like to refrigerate my bars. They also freeze well.
Enjoy!
Until next time, Kelly
