Why felt crafts?
I love doing craft projects with felt. Crafting with felt doesn’t have to be pricey or difficult to do. I like to use synthetic felt, as well as, wool felt. Felt is easy to sew with. Additionally, it is good for all kinds of projects. Some basic sewing and embroidery know-how is all that is needed. You can create some fun items for yourself or to give as gifts!
Where do I find ideas & supplies?
I find ideas on Pinterest. Patterns and wool felt can be found in most quilt shops. Amazon and Etsy also have projects and materials. Synthetic felt is available at Craft stores or Walmart. Embroidery floss is used to stitch around the pieces. When adding accent pieces, like buttons, I use sewing thread.
What can I make with felt?
You can make Christmas ornaments!
Most of the felt pieces are fastened with embroidery floss. For the small pieces, use a fabric glue. I use either buttons or embroidery floss to make eyes. I like to add small gems, pompoms or stuff the ornament for a dimensional appearance.
The details are put on before you stitch it together, so the back of the stitches are hidden inside the ornament when it is sewn together.
Add a string to hang the ornament from before you sew it together. First, put a dab of glue on the string, then attach it to the felt on the inside. Next, sew the back and front of the ornament together. Put a stitch or two through the string to make sure it is securely attached.

The stem on the pumpkin is a bent spoon.
The bat is stuffed with rice so he will sit.

They come in a kit that I ordered. Everything from the ribbon to the stuffing, embroidery floss and wool felt are included.
Other ideas…
A table runner.
This pattern is in a craft book I bought. First, I put the flowers and leaves on in layers using embroidery floss. Then I attached beads to the middle of the flowers with a needle and thread.
The backing on the runner can be felt or fabric.
These are called candle mats.
Candle mat patterns are common to find at quilt shops. You will generally need to buy the felt and embroidery floss in addition to the pattern.
Note: It is important to know what is included with the pattern before you buy it.
Does this spark interest?
Whether you create your own pattern or buy one, this is a relaxing hobby that doesn’t take too much time. There are so many other projects you can do from wall hangings, decorative pillows, to the pin cushions shown above.
