Dog’s Oral Health

Do you brush your dog’s teeth?

Today I want to talk about dental care for dogs. It is often overlooked. It is important to remove the plaque that leads to bad breath, decayed teeth and gum disease.

Sadly, 80% of dogs show signs of gum infection as soon as three years old. Since a dog’s mouth is the gateway to a healthy life, brushing will help your dog live a longer life.

Where to start:

Buy a dog toothpaste. Never use human toothpaste which contain ingredients toxic to dogs. Keeping Your Dog Safe

My vet recommended using an enzymatic toothpaste. This type of toothpaste contains enzymes that help remove the bacteria in a dog’s mouth. When used daily it can decrease the buildup of plaque. Plaque is a sticky deposit on the teeth which creates a perfect environment for bacteria to grow.

Pick up a tooth brush specially made for dogs. There are several styles. I tried using a toothbrush for our dogs, but they have small mouths. Instead I use the cotton circles I made to wipe their eyes. https://icansewthis.com/reusable-cotton-rounds/

Start slow if your dog or pup has never had their teeth brushed.

  • First, lift their lip, getting them used to you working with their mouth.
  • Next, when they are comfortable with that, move on to touching the toothbrush to their teeth. Remember to praise your dog. Giving treats is okay.
  • Let them lick a little toothpaste off of your finger so they get used to the taste. Dogs tend to like the flavored toothpaste. Our dogs like the poultry flavor, but I am not a fan of chicken flavored kisses! I use vanilla mint and they like it just the same!
  • When they are ready, add some toothpaste to the toothbrush and gently brush their upper front teeth.
  • Then you can increase to include brushing the bottom teeth. Add the sides if they are doing well.

It is quick and easy to do

I brush my dog’s teeth each morning as part of their normal routine. They like the taste of the toothpaste. They not only have fresh breath, but cleaner healthier teeth. Dogs only need the outside of their teeth brushed so, it goes pretty quick.

Notes:

It’s never too late to start cleaning your dog’s teeth!
