This is a fun quick project that you can keep for yourself or give as gifts. Whether keeping your hands warm when eating ice cream or protecting them from hot soup it is a great addition to your pot holders.

Important before starting

First, it is important to know that when making these, you need to use all cotton materials. Putting your cozy in the microwave when warming up soup will make the cozy warm as well. If you use polyester thread or fabric, it can melt. Batting that is not meant to go in the microwave can also be a hazard. I use Pellon Wrap-N-Zap microwave cotton batting.

Gather supplies

1. Since the cozy is reversible, I like to use 2 different pieces of 100% cotton fabric. 2 fat quarters, a 1/2 yard of cotton material or use fabric you may have in your stash.
2. Cotton batting.
3. All cotton thread.
4. Sewing pins or clips.
5. A sewing pencil marker or Taylor’s chalk to mark your sewing lines.

Cut your pieces

Cut 2- 10 inch by 10 inch pieces out of your fabric, followed by 2- 10×10 inch pieces of batting.

Start putting it together

Put 1 fabric and 1 batting square together, with the right side of the fabric facing out. Pin together and repeat with the second set of fabric and batting.

Fold the square in 1/2 and press it down with your fingers. This will help you mark the sewing lines. A square “X” needs to be marked, so fold it the other way to mark the second line.

Mark the sewing lines

Open the square, next mark the line in the crease you made. Use a ruler to help make a good straight line. Repeat in the other direction.

Diagonal lines

After marking the square “X”, mark diagonal lines by using the ruler going from corner to corner.

Get out the sewing machine

Sew the diagonal lines, so it makes an “X”.

Measure & mark the darts

To form the bowl, 4 darts are needed. The darts are created at the end of each of the lines marked to make the square.

With a ruler, measure and mark 1 inch out from the line on the left side and again on the right side of the line. Now measure up 2 inches from the edge of the line/fabric and mark that.

Repeat for all 4 sides.

Sewing the darts

Fold together on the line. Match up the 1 inch marks on each side of the line in the middle. Start by sewing from the 2 inch mark you made, angling out to a triangle to meet the 1 inch marks made at the edge of the fabric.

Assembly

Put the 2 finished halves together with the fabric sides facing in. Line up all the edges and pin together.

Next

Be sure to leave about a 4 inch gap so you can turn the bowl right side out. Sew a 1/4 inch seam the rest of the way around. Clip the points off to reduce bulk and make nice pointed edges.

Finishing

1. Turn the bowl right side out. Use a knitting needle or scissors to gently push the fabric out at the points.
2. Once it is all straightened out and flat, hand sew the opening shut.
3. Lastly, top stitch all the way around the edge of the bowl.
